June
14th is Flag Day. Everyone has seen the beautiful Stars and Stripes
flying proudly in this, the best country on earth. As someone
who was born outside the United States, I notice that there are
more flags flying on any given day in the US than anywhere else
I have visited. This visible demonstration of national pride is
beautiful and inspiring.
But
what does that have to do with a health tip? Well, put on a pair
of tennis shoes, take a dose of national pride and go for a walk.

You
could walk around your neighborhood and see who has flags
flying this week. |
| |
Or
you could take a stroll in downtown Bend and count the flags.
This could become a fun family activity if you make it a competition
to see who can spot the most flags (like license plate bingo).
|
| |
For
the more athletic, an energetic option would be a hike up
Pilot Butte while flag-spotting. |

If
you enjoy a drive, the city of Redmond offers a fabulous display
on Flag Day (and any other public holiday) when many streets
are lined with flags. You could take a walk around Redmond's
streets, which are conveniently flat, making walking easy
and fun, and enjoy this inspiring sight. |
Walking
is a fun activity, and can be as easy or as challenging as you
choose. So this Flag Day, take a walk and air out your patriotism
at the same time.
