Being
"fit" means different things to different people. Fitness
can be measured in a multitude of ways; be it physical, mental,
emotional, or spiritual. Improving and maintaining health and
well being involves all four categories. Perhaps "balance"
is the best synonym when it comes to fitness.
Research
is clear that physical activity and exercise are critical for
health and active life participation. If you are already active,
KEEP IT UP! It may even be time to push yourself a little harder.
If you have stopped exercising for some reason, let us encourage
you to get started again. Come join our Walk Yourself Well program
(beginning in October).
Mental
health involves recognizing when we are on overload and prioritizing
mental health breaks. This may mean doing a "mindless"
activity that you enjoy, taking a short time out or, if possible,
a vacation. Only you can give yourself appropriate mental health
time or activity. Slow down and get to know yourself. You will
know what you need when you need it.
Emotional
fitness can be a hard one to tackle. Most of us do not have control
over external circumstances or the people in our lives. When we
think we have control we often find that it was an illusion. What
we truly have control over is our choice of response(s) to the
circumstances in our life and our relationships. Often this will
require a few moments to think of how we would like to respond,
rather than a reflexive reaction. Like any "fitness"
regimen we will get better with practice. We can choose emotion
rather than allowing it to choose us. REMEMBER: practice makes
better, we will never be perfect.
Spiritual
fitness is a host of interpretations along a broad continuum.
Perhaps we might measure it by a sense of internal peace. This
peace seems to spring from a sense of faith that "all will
be well." My deductive reasoning tells me that spiritual
fitness may be expanded or exercised through meditative practices
and daily living that reduces our sense of fear. Indeed fear is
probably the biggest obstacle to spiritual well being. Explore
your own path and delight in your peaceful moments.
