From the Healing Bridge Physical Therapy
Fall 2004 Newsletter

by Nancy Hartung B.S. PTA

Learning can occur through a variety of mechanisms. Some examples are:

Visual - what you see

Auditory - what you hear

Sensorimotor - what you experience using the motion or movement of your body

Experiential - what your emotional and physiological response is to information or experience

Your learning style influences how you learn best. You may be a visual learner, and watching or reading will be your easiest process. A hands-on learner (motor) may learn best by "doing." It will help if you know your style. You can then maximize your learning potential by utilizing that method.

10 tips for maximizing your learning process:

Repeat, repeat, repeat

Write it down - the process of writing can be especially helpful for "motor" or visual learners.

Practice or study daily.

Ask questions, try to understand "the big picture" or concept.

After you get "the big picture" about the "why." Try to breakdown the details or tasks.

Prioritize importance of details or tasks.

Review, visualize, or imagine what you are trying to learn morning and evening.

Sleep well, and avoid trying to learn while tired.

Eat well, and avoid trying to learn while hungry.

Try explaining/showing it to someone else. Teaching something will reinforce it for you.
