From the Healing Bridge Physical Therapy
Summer 2003 Newsletter

When you think of exercise, it may conjure images of over exertion, sore muscles, or just plain discomfort. This is never the desired outcome at Healing Bridge. where we work with you to identify and prioritize your physical therapy goals.

Physical therapy exercise is used to reduce discomfort and optimize mobility. We call this Therapeutic Exercise. Through the evaluation process, your therapist helps you identify impairments or pain patterns. Therapeutic Exercise can be implemented to address issues or impairments of strength, balance, endurance, mobility, posture, movement, pain, performance, inefficiency, instability, or breathing patterns. Your exercise program will be designed with your input to be appropriate and relevant to your goals and your daily life.

Therapeutic exercise can be divided into four types:

Strength

Flexibility

Endurance/Cardiovascular fitness

Relaxation/well-being

Exercise for strengthening purposes may include a home exercise program, weight resistive exercise with such equipment as Theraband, free weights, or a more sophisticated system call the Total Gym. Also, the well-known gym ball or therapy ball offers many ways to accomplish strengthening.

Endurance/Cardiovascular exercise is not only beneficial to the heart but also to the injuries of soft tissue and joints because of the increased blood flow to these areas. Upright bikes, recumbent bikes or treadmills work well.

Flexibility can be restored and maintained with stretching exercises and instruction in proper techniques.

Relaxation and well-being can be a result of exercise. Exercise is known to reduce stress, increase ability to relax and improve sleep.

We offer one-on-one exercise instruction and tailor it to best meet your learning style and life style. Providing a clear and concise program creates understanding of the process and allows comfortable participation. Your independence and self-management of your program is the ultimate goal. We give you a written home program and we offer training and/or education to family members or friends to provide support appropriate to assist you.

We monitor and modify your therapeutic exercise program as you progress, and will refer you to community-based programs when you no longer require specific physical therapy services.
