Wiggle Your Toes Day - August 6

From the Healing Bridge Physical Therapy
August 2010 Wellness Notes

By Zeyla Brandt, PT

"This little piggy went to market"…

At the end of our feet are ten toes just crying out for some freedom. After being cramped up in our shoes and boots all winter (and spring!), our toes haven't had the chance to move about as freely they would like.

So let's celebrate "Wiggle Your Toes Day" by airing out our toes and wiggling them around for all to see. The warm weather in August allows us to wiggle our toes in a pool, a stream, the garden, or just around the house. This, of course, requires walking there, and if we do this barefoot, we get the pleasure of feeling the grass, sand, or dirt under our bare feet.

Did you Know?

  • Not all toes are alike. Like people, toes come in all shapes and sizes. There is a small percentage of the population who have two or more toes partially joined together....webbed toes! This works for both the Duck fans and the Beavers, both of which have webbed toes.
  • The average person walks the equivalent of three and a half times around the earth in a lifetime.
  • One quarter of all the bones in the human body are found in the feet.
  • Left handed people are generally left footed as well. They also tend to put their left foot forward first when they walk.
  • And the answer to Why do fingers and toes wrinkle when they have been in the water? The outermost layer of the skin swells when it absorbs water. It is tightly attached to the skin underneath, so it compensates for the increased area by wrinkling.
