Your initial visit to a physical therapist involves a thorough
evaluation of your back. This includes assessment of your pain
symptoms and activities that increase or decrease your pain. In
addition, you'll receive an in-depth evaluation of your posture,
movements, muscle strength and length, and asymmetries. From your
evaluation your physical therapist will choose from a wide range
of treatment interventions to best facilitate your full recovery.
This may involve soft tissue massage to stretch and relax the
tightened muscles, specific exercises and stretches to bring balance
to your posture and movement, and noninvasive techniques to support
full spine alignment.
Physical Therapists also emphasize educating you so that you
can understand how the "normal" use of yourself in everyday
activities has interfered with having a healthy back. Your physical therapy program will be tailored to your specific complaint, as
your specific information about your injury, activities, and posture,
even prior to the event causing the injury, will determine the
success of your recovery.
